Nominations for this year’s Leicester Mercury Business Awards have now closed with companies throughout the region now facing an anxious wait to discover if they have made the shortlist of finalists. With so much competition in all 14 categories at the awards, the unenviable task of whittling down the nominees to a list of three shortlisted finalists will be the responsibility of the category sponsors.
The sponsor of this year’s ‘Excellence in Manufacturing Award’ is expert food manufacturer, Samworth Brothers. Established over 100 years ago, the company are UK leaders in the premium chilled, ambient foods and food-to-go industries producing a range of meals, desserts and sandwiches for consumers to enjoy. As well as this, the Leicestershire based business own the likes of Ginsters, Soreen and SCI-MX, demonstrating their proficiency in a range of different areas.
Nick Gale is the Managing Director of Kettleby Foods and Brooksby Foods at Samworth Brothers and he discussed why they chose to sponsor this particular category. He said: “As a food manufacturing group, with ten of our manufacturing sites located within the county, sponsoring the ‘Excellence in Manufacturing Award’ allows us an opportunity to champion other local manufacturing businesses.”
He continued: “It is particularly pleasing to celebrate the achievements of the people behind the most outstanding companies, when the competition amongst Leicestershire’s varied and thriving manufacturing industry is so strong.”
A family owned business, Samworth Brothers employ more than 9,000 people and know the importance of supporting local business. Nick highlighted what other contributions they make to the regional business community. He said: “As a family business with a long history and a long-term view, our customers appreciate our stability and the strong relationships we have. We are proud that a high proportion of our own people have long service with us and for many this extends to family members and across the generations. As well as this the majority of our businesses and the people we employ are based in Leicestershire.”
He continued: “We are active in our local communities supporting a wide range of charitable causes, embracing environmental best practice and forging long-standing partnerships with suppliers who share our values and quality standards. Geographically, Leicestershire is a great place to be and its central location has supported our growth. An example of the importance of doing business in the region is our newly opened and purpose-built £12m Supply Chain facility, which is located in Leicester.”
Having been succesful for so many years, Samworth Brothers are constantly evolving and look set to create more exciting new products in 2018 and beyond. Nick explained the company’s aims for the coming year: “One area which we will continue to focus on in 2018 is the growing awareness and popularity of health and wellbeing. We are developing contemporary new products like our nutritious MOR sausages range and we will also be incorporating healthier eating into existing products, too. Another area is the changing retail environment and we are keen to support our customers with what they value, which we know is quality and innovation.”
With nominations for the awards now closed, we have now entered the judging period of the Leicester Mercury Business Awards. Nominees will have to wait until March to discover whether they have made it onto the final shortlist.
