Samworth Brothers to celebrate excellence in manufacturing at Leicester Mercury Business Awards

Market leaders when it comes to food manufacturing Samworth Brothers have been one of Leicester’s most successful businesses for over a century.

Established in 1896 the business produces a diverse range of chilled foods for both retail and food-to-go customers including sandwiches, desserts and meals. The company has grown exponentially over the years and now employs more than 9,000 members of staff. As well as this, they also own the likes of Ginsters, Soreen and SCI-MX.

Now they have reaffirmed their support of Leicester’s regional business community and have been announced as category sponsors of the upcoming Leicester Mercury Business Awards. They will be throwing their weight behind the ‘Excellence in Manufacturing’ award which will honour a business whose manufacturing efforts have gone above and beyond.

Sally Mitchell is the Director of Meals at Samworth Brothers and she explained why they chose to sponsor this particular award.

“As a food manufacturing group located within the county, sponsoring the ‘Excellence in Manufacturing Award’ allows us an opportunity to champion other local manufacturing businesses.

“It is particularly pleasing to celebrate the achievements of the people behind the most outstanding companies, when the competition amongst Leicestershire’s varied and thriving manufacturing industry is so strong.”

Sponsoring the awards is not the only way in which Samworth Brothers contribute to business in Leicester. Sally highlighted what other activities they are involved with.

“Every day millions of people enjoy the food that we make and the majority of our businesses and the people we employ are based in Leicestershire. We are proud that a high proportion of our people have long service with us and for many this extends to family members and across the generations.

“We are active in our local communities supporting a wide range of charitable causes including disadvantaged young people through our Sports Opportunity Fund. We embrace environmental best practice across all manner of our operations, from fuel efficient driver training at our Samworth Brothers Supply Chain, through to using 100% certified renewable electricity across the whole group. Having long-standing partnerships with suppliers who share our values and quality standards is important to us.

“Geographically, Leicestershire is a great place to be and its central location has supported our growth.”

This year’s Leicester Mercury Business Awards will take place on 11 April at the Maher Centre. Bringing together key members of Leicester’s business community companies of all sizes and from all sectors will be acknowledged at the black-tie ceremony.
